Microsoft launched its tablet, the Surface, on Tuesday. It retails for $499 with 32GB of storage. The product quickly sold out of stores. link

Boxee announced BoxeeTV, a $99 over the air TV and cloud DVR. link

Circa, a new editorially curated news application created by Matt Galligan and Ben Huh, launched last week to great acclaim. link

Uber launched Taxi in San Francisco for hailing taxis using a mobile phone. The company shut down a similar product in New York after 6 weeks due to difficulties with the Taxi and Limousine Commission. link link

Path released a new version of the application that allows users to import social feed data from Facebook, Instagram and Foursquare. link

PayPal is launching Bill Me Later, a financing option for purchases of $99 or more, to small and medium online businesses with an APR of 20%. link

Amazon launched two kids focussed sites, Bookworm and Afterschool, which will sell books and sporting goods respectively. Quidsi, the parent company of Diapers.com and Soap.com, which was acquired by Amazon, will operate these sites. link Separately, Whispercast, a new product from Amazon, allows schools to purchase books and manage their deployment to Amazon devices, a big move in the etextbook market. link

Google missed earnings expectations. The company reported mobile CPCs are 50% less than web CPCs and that CPCs had fallen by 15% y/y. link Google will offer carrier billing to Verizon subscribers, matching similar deals with ATT and TMobile. link Google announced the company is an $8B mobile run rate comprising revenue from apps, ads and content up from $2.5B last year. link

LinkedIn records about 2B people searches per month and is growing its profiles by 175k per day. link

MyFitnessPal announced 30M users adding 1.5M each month. MyFitnessPal is a free fitness tracking application. link

ooVoo, the social video chat application, is adding 1M users every 14 days. link

Newsweek has gone all digital. The magazine will no longer print paper copies in 2013. link

Nokia reported 28% reductions in devices sold in Q3 and a $745M loss. link

Microsoft will offer students Office 365 for $79 for four years, a pricing model to compete with Google’s free applications. link

Yahoo will close its operations in Korea to cut costs. link

Rakuten announced that of its $5B in annual revenue, 25% is mobile. Of the $1.3B in mobile revenue, 60% is from smart phones and 40% from feature phones. Mobile revenues are growing at 300 to 400% annually. link

SiteScout, the SMB demand side platform, announced 5000 customers and $20M in gross revenue. link

Henrique de Castro has joined Yahoo as COO. His compensation package may reach $58M. link

Gilt is selling its troubled travel property Jetsetter for about $50M. link
