Nielsen released analysis last week indicating online ad spending grew 12% y/y. In fact, all ad categories (TV, Radio, Outdoor, Newspapers and Cinema) grew by 2.8% or more, except for magazines which fell by 1.4%. link

Smartphone shipments represent 56.9% of mobile phones sold in China in Q2’12 according to the Chinese Ministry of Technology. According to Nikko Partners, by the end of 2012, there will be 200M active smartphones in China. Android constitutes 55% market share of Chinese smartphones. link

82 venture capital funds raised $13 billion during the first six months of the year, an increase of 31 percent over the same period last year according to Dow Jones. link

Pinterest generates about 1.2% of referral traffic on Shareholic’s network of 200,000 sites, which exceeds Twitter’s by 30% and is equivalent to Bing, and only about 30% short of Yahoo. link

US PC shipments fell 10.6% y/y according to IDC as tablets and mobile phones cannibalize desktop and laptop sales. link

Yahoo released Genome, ad targeting and analysis software based from Interclick, acquired by Yahoo in Nov. 2011 for $270 million. link

Next Issue Media has released their one-subscription for all magazines application on iPad. The company is a joint venture fo the top 5 magazine publishers and had released an Android application previously. NextIssue will compete directly with Apple’s Newsstand. link

Ouya, an Android gaming console launched on Kickstarter with a retail price of $99, has raised $1.5M in less than 24 hours. Yves Behar is the industrial designer. link

Amazon has released GameCircle, a gaming social network for its Fire devices. Amazon’s ARPU is 89% that of Apple according to Flurry. link

Verizon has launched an unlimited gaming subscription service for Android devices. For $6 monthly, subscribers may access more than 100 titles. link

The DC City Council proposed and then quickly rescinded legislation that would have required black cars to charge at least five times more than taxis, pricing aimed directly at preventing Uber from competing with incumbents. link

Dropbox has doubled the storage capacity of its paid accounts as pricing competition from Google, Apple and Microsoft heats up. link

LevelUp, a mobile payments provider, has eliminated the interchange fee for its merchants leapfrogging Square, Intuit and PayPal who dropped their fees to 2.75% or lower. link


About 14% of the technology firms that have held initial public offerings between January 2011 and the end of June 2012 went public with at least two share classes. link

Kayak’s IPO has priced at $22 to $25 and will raise $100M under the symbol KYAK. link

Facebook has acquired Spool, makers of a content-caching service.  link

Palo Alto networks has priced its IPO at $34 to $37 per share and willl raise up to $175M under the symbol PANW. PAN generated $119M in 2011, up 143% y/y. link

Microsoft has acquired large touchscreen display maker Perceptive Pixel for an undisclosed amount. Perceptive Pixel’s screen range in size from 27 to 82 inches. link

Salesforce will acquire GoInstant, makers of software enabling synchronous browsing tools without plugins, for $70M. link

Oracle has acquired Facebook social marketing startup Involver for an undisclosed amount. link
