For the first time, paid TV services (1.5M) lost more subscribers than it gained (1.1M). Similarly, time spent watching TV fell by 0.5%. DVR usage increased 12%. Video game consoles reached 45% penetration of US homes and time spent on these consoles has increased by 30% y/y. link

37% of teens use video chats and 13% stream video live to the internet. These behaviors are primarily driven through social media, according to Pew Research. link

The iPhone generates 54% of mobile gaming revenues and the iPad with 30%, leaving Android with 16% share. link Similarly, Apple earns 73% of mobile profits with only 9% unit share. link According to ad network Chititka, the iPad represents 95% of tablet web traffic despite claiming only 68% of sales. link

Android will generate about $98M in Q1 revenues according to disclosures made by Google in the Google/Oracle suit. This compares to $1.9B in revenue for the iTunes store in gross revenue including movies, music and apps. link & link

Wired released data on the success of digital news subscription from various sources: link

  • 33 to 45% of consumers who pay for subscriptions never hit a pay wall.
  • 30% of digital only subscribers have been upsold to Sunday physical delivery for the NYT and LATimes.
  • 70% of the Economist’s digital subscribers are new customers. There is very little overlap between digital and physical customers.
  • Page views fall 10 to 15% with a paywall, but uniques remain constant.

Product Releases

Google announced BigQuery, a PaaS big data service, that allows customers to query and manipulate the data using an SQL-like language. The service is priced at $0.035 per GB processed, after the first 100GB which are free. link

Microsoft is planning to sell the Microsoft XBox and Connect for $99 provided a consumer signs up for 2 years of XBox Live service for $15 per month, much like a cell phone is sold. XBox demand has fallen 16% y/y for Q4. link

Samsung announced the Galaxy III, the next iteration of its flagship device. The company has sold 10M units in 10 months of its very successful Galaxy II. link

Rovio announced Angry Birds Space has been downloaded 50M times in 35 days. Total downloads for the franchise have exceeded more than 900M. link

Edmodo announced it serves 7M users across 80,000 schools. The company enables teachers to share content with students in K-12. link

LinkedIn reports Q1 revenue of $189M (+101% y/y) and net income increased to $5M. Hiring solutions’ revenue, the subscription service for recruiters, is now 54% of revenue, up from 49% last year. LinkedIn’s membership increased to 161M users (+11% y/y). link

BrightCove revenue increased to $19.9M (+53%) with a net loss of $4.3M. The company is trading at a $500M market cap. link
