At GDC, Facebook announced it had paid $1.4B to game developers making the Facebook app ecosystem about 1/3 the size of the iOS ecosystem in total transaction value. Separately, Facebook released Interest Lists, a feature which builds socially informed newspaper sites for users based on friends’ reading habits. Zynga announced three new developer partnerships with Konami, Playdemic and Rebellion. These developers will build games for Zynga’s social gaming platform. link

Apple released a new version of AppleTV which supports HD output and recognizes digital copies of DVDs, becoming a competitor to the UltraViolet standard promoted by several movies studios. Newer DVDs include digital copies of the movie for users to transfer the file to computers for watching later. But these digital copies require entering a PIN. AppleTV will recognize these copies and allow playback. link

The DOJ is investigating Apple and book publishing houses for antitrust violations. Apple’s provision requiring identical pricing on eBooks sold through iTunes as other channels is the main concern. link

American Express launched a marketing program that enables users who link an Amex card account to a Twitter account to win coupons by tweeting certain hashtags. link

Mobile

Apple released the next version of the iPad with a very high resolution screen, displaying twice the resolution of traditional HD screens. The company announced 315M iOS devices sold to date. In Q4, 15.4M iPads were sold. link

Jamie Rosenberg has been promoted to manage the entire Android Market Place, now known as Google Play, replacing Eric Chu. link

FourSquare’s venue listings now include venue hours of operation, positioning its product as in more direct competition with Yelp. link

Cosmopolitan announced 100,000 paying iPad app subscribers, likely distinguishing it as the most successful eMagazine to date. link

Apple has offered Google and Motorola a licensing agreement for patent infringement that would require the combined company to pay $5 to $15 per device shipped. link

Square is processing $4B annually in payments, about 50% of PayPal’s forecasted 2012 GMV. link

Kayak updated their S-1 which 2011 revenues of $225M (+32%) and net income of $9.7M (+21%). Queries grew by 42% y/y. link

Millennal Media, the mobile ad network, updated its S-1. The company will raise $75M. 2011 revenue increased to $104M (+117%) and the company reported a net loss of $.25M link

Green Dot acquired Loopt for $43.4M link

SingTel, the main mobile carrier in Singapore, acquired mobile ad server company, for $324M. The company had raised $54M. link
