In Barcelona, tourists passing by a square can stand on a platform, pose and have a plastic statue made of them in minutes. There’s a video below of the experience.

Several Microsoft Kinects process the 3D images and send the model to a 3D printer. The total cost for the installation is a few thousand dollars. Two disruptive technologies power this exhibit: low cost, high fidelity 3D imaging & input and inexpensive 3D printing. Both of these have been brought to market in the past year or so.

MIT has built an autonomous helicopter that can perform indoor 3D mapping, an evolution of this project. In Georgia, the Kinect can interpret sign language.

Machine vision has come a long way as costs have plummeted, processing power has grown geometrically and algorithms have improved. The applications seem endless.
