eMarketer released some survey data detailing how a sample of users use both Twitter and Facebook. The most surprising thing to me about the results is similar the outcomes are.

Taking a look at the data sets below the percentage of Generation X users and <35 claim about 70% use it for staying in touch with friends, 35% use it for staying in touch with family and about 10% use it for staying in touch with co-workers.

From this data, it’s not unreasonable to draw the conclusion that Twitter and Facebook are competing for the same data and validate Facebook’s conclusion that Twitter is a true threat to the Facebook hegemony for user attention.
